Books Are Important

If we folk here on planet earth truly experience a major upheaval, we may be forced to go cold turkey on our exquisite affair with the internet. If this is true, books will come in handy. I say this because I'm afraid many of us might assume we'll always be able to go to the internet for help in planting gardens, eating bugs, locating contraband, etc. I know, it's a strange scenario, me sitting at my computer while crunching insects. lol

Do you guys have a good survivalist library on hand? Any recommendations?

Also, if our taken-for-granted modern day conveniences begin to disappear, how far up or down the chain do you think the net will be, assuming one has the funds to pay for access?

I take the articles/tutorials on things i find relevant and print them up to stick it in a binder - beats having tons of books and is always available offline.

You can build quite an encyclopedia this way.

Yes good point. I have been loading up on books.

The best I have found so far is the Foxfire series. I picked volumes 1-5 for 15$ at a local used book store.

A bit pricey but you could get them new here.

Hey speaking of books & survival prep, I loaned out several good books recently and do you know what happened ??????

One friend loaned one of books to someone else and she never got it back because that person thought she gave it to him !!

Next book gets returned to me all crinkled and stained because someone spilled herb tea
all over my book !!!!!

I will never loan out any of my books anymore. If they want to read them, they will have to park their butt right here and read all you want !!!

Some people have nerve !

Whenever I "lend" anyone a book I consider it a gift of edification for the recipient.
I don't really care if they never return it; it could be very helpful for them and I already read it.
I don't need to carry the book around with me all the time; throw it into the crowd; see if it helps.

...that being said, I do have a few books I would likely never lend out. :rose:

GS,
My books aren't the kind you just read and give away.
I've already given those all away years ago.
All of my books are invaluable for SHTF.
Tons and tons of info that you can't just memorize.

I work for a large telecommunications company and just transferred to one of our DSL centers to get closer to home. We sell 3 meg DSL lines for $20.00 a month ( I think this is right, I work in installation and maintenance, not in sales but I remember seeing a price list and that was what they were going for. Maybe some one here who actually has one can correct me if I am wrong). The internet has become such a part of our lives I think people will hold on to it as long as they can. Where else can you spend $20.00 a month have entertainment 24/7, do job searches and do any other business you need to do.

Businesses who feel the pinch may get rid of their T1's and go with a 6 meg line to save money. One of the perks of having a T1 is the service that comes with it. If alot of businesses drop their T1's for DSL I wouldn't be surprised if we begin offering some kind of package that gives them some kind of guarantee on how long we will take to repair it. With T1's we have a required rebate interval in which we pay the customer a rebate for time lost while the circuit is down. It usually kicks in after 24 hours.

I remember reading a story a while back about a Japanese man who did quite well during Japan's technology boom but lost his job when it went bust. His wife and children left him and he was reduced to working in a factory to make a living. He was living in a small apartment with an internet connection. After reading that story I wondered if I transferred to a recession proof job. And to think I wanted to stay in the center working on special circuits, i.e T1's, T3's etc.

Books Books and more Books! I have a reference library maybe 10-12 thousand titles. Anything you want to kwon is in there and I add more all the time. Once in a while I'll get a gem, just a couple of weeks ago my wife bought a book at the Middlesboro library book sale. She paid 50 cents for it. The book is titled "The Detroit Tigers" 1st edition. The good part? It has 42 baseball player signatures! Players like Ty Cobb and Ted Williams and 40 more! Its going to PSA for authentication soon, and then it's for sale!

This is one quarter of my library. There are 5 shelves and the floor for a total of 6 shelves. There's 120 feet of these, total and I need more cause the boxes are stacking up again!

And here's the card catalog

It's mindboggling how quickly the Internet seems to have become an indispensible part of our lives. I'll never give up my books, though. I read constantly, and I have a huge library. Most of our available wall space is lined with bookshelves. We even have bookshelves in the kitchen and the hallway. The overflow is packed in crates, both upstairs and downstairs in the basement.

i love old musty smelling, yellowed out pages, loose binding, and you just know nobody has looked inside for a long, long time, hundred year old books...

crack that book open and.....mmmm....good...

but more to the point...what i did for a survivalist library is books that were written about my area when the natives and settlers lived off the land...

such as local:

wild and edilble plants
how to identify safe mushrooms
medicinal plants
native folklore
homesteader tales

Wow mountainman, that's one big library. Awesome stuff!!! I envy your life... :(

An easy way to get an idea of what kind of person someone is is to loan them something. Sadly, my experience has been that at least three-quarters of you SUCK! I've loaned stuff like books, movies and video games and it would be like pulling a tooth to get them back. grrrr. I'm pickier about it now, but still loan less important stuff to people I havent dealt with before. But only stuff I can stand to lose.

My first year in high school I found this book on the shelves, the SAS survival guide (or something like that). Good reading then. I never forgot some of the info in it. Tricks for getting food and water and so on if you were stuck in the middle of nowhere.
